Wally’s farewell

Konawaena wrestling coach Wally Nakashima recently stepped down for the final time.

He spent 14 years as the Wildcats coach, after serving two years as an assistant from 1989 to ’90.

Nakashima, 49, had several stints, stepping down then returning. No matter how hard he tried the lure of the connecting with his Wildcats brought him back.

“The best part was working with the kids,” he said. “Some turned their life around and some came out of their shell. They would find that toughness, dedication, desire and all that.

“For a coach, you’ve got to want to coach and see them excel. That’s the reward you get out of it.”

Konawaena is accepting applications for the position of wrestling head coach. For more information, contact Bill Trumbo at william_trumbo@notes.k12.hi.us.
